Loch Ness is seeing a sharp rise in reported monster encounters this year.

The latest addition comes from a local Highland sailor who says he spotted something unusual while taking his yacht through Loch Ness on July 25. At around 4 p.m., roughly two miles west of Glenmoriston, he reported seeing what he described as a large, oversized crocodile-like head about 100 meters away.
The sailor said conditions were good, with slight water movement and clear visibility. The object appeared between his yacht and the north shore, then disappeared before he was able to take a photograph. He said it took him a few moments to process what he was seeing, and by then it was gone.
The sighting was only recently added to the official register, bringing the 2026 count to 17. That means 2026 has gone from being just short of last year’s total to exceeding it by seven reports in a matter of weeks. Whether the jump is due to increased attention, more reporting, misidentified wildlife, unusual conditions, or something genuinely unexplained, Loch Ness is having a notably active year.
