READ: ‘The Conjuring’ House in Rhode Island Set for Auction on Halloween

The Rhode Island farmhouse that inspired The Conjuring is headed to the auction block on Halloween, because of course it is.

JJManning Auctioneers has listed the Burrillville, R.I., property for a mortgagee’s foreclosure auction. Town officials confirmed the auction date, set for October 31, which feels less like scheduling and more like marketing.

The antique farmhouse sits on about 8.5 acres and last sold in 2022 for $1.5 million to Bale Fire LLC, a company controlled by Jacqueline Nuñez, who describes herself as a medium. After closing, Nuñez turned the place into an overnight destination for ghost-curious travelers.

The vibes apparently soured last August when, according to prior reports, Nuñez fired an employee after claiming the spirit of John Arnold—a 19th-century owner—tipped her off about alleged theft. The firing sparked a dispute over back pay, and other former workers surfaced with complaints of their own. By November, Burrillville officials revoked the property’s entertainment license, citing issues with the site, the application, and interactions with local police. Trips that had already been sold weren’t canceled, which left some visitors trying to claw back hundreds or even thousands of dollars they’d spent to commune with the beyond.

Nuñez also clashed with corners of the paranormal world. Jason Hawes of TV’s Ghost Hunters filed a police report alleging Nuñez harassed him and his family.

There is, however, a pair of living, breathing enthusiasts eager to step in: comedian Matt Rife and YouTuber Elton Castee. The duo recently bought the Connecticut home once owned by famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren and have publicly expressed interest in adding The Conjuring house to their collection of “why-did-that-door-open-by-itself” real estate. “As a fan of the paranormal, film, and the history of the property and the land it sits on, it’d be an honor to help preserve its beauty,” Rife said in a recent statement.

A foreclosure auction doesn’t guarantee the house will transfer to a new owner on the spot—bidders still have to meet the lender’s terms—but it does mean the clock is striking midnight for the current arrangement. Given the property’s notoriety and its ready-made fanbase, expect a lively bidding room full of prospective buyers and EMF detectors. Bring your checkbook—and maybe a priest!
